Release Blitz: After We Fall by Melanie Harlow

After We Fall
by Melanie Harlow
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publication Date: November 28th, 2016

Jack Valentini isn’t my type.

Sexy, brooding cowboys are fine in the movies, but in real life, I prefer a suit and tie. Proper manners. A close shave.

Jack might be gorgeous, but he’s also scruffy, rugged, and rude. He wants nothing to do with a “rich city girl” like me, and he isn’t afraid to say so.

But I’ve got a PR job to do for his family’s farm, so he’s stuck with me for ten days, and I’m stuck with him. His glares. His moods. His tight jeans. His muscles.

His huge, hard muscles.

Pretty soon there’s a whole different kind of tension between us, the kind that has me misbehaving in barns, trees, and pickup trucks. I’ve never done anything so out of character—but it feels too good to stop.

And the more I learn about the grieving ex-Army sergeant, the better I understand him. Losing his wife three years ago left him broken and bitter and blaming himself. He doesn’t think he deserves a second chance at happiness.

But he’s wrong.

I don’t need to be his first love. If only he’d let me be his last.

“Second chances are not given to make things right, but are given to prove that we could be even better after we fall.”  - Unknown

“Why’d you push me earlier?”
“It’s not important.”
But it was. She felt it in her chest. It was so important, and she needed him to say it again. She was salivating for the chance. She wanted to reassure him, and this time she felt it in her heart. She knew she wasn’t going anywhere. She wanted him to see it in her eyes, that she meant every single word.
She whispered now, “Ask me. Ask me again.”
His eyes met hers, narrowing slightly. He was looking into her, reading her.
She was letting him. There was no wall, no hesitation this time. She wanted him to know her, not just her body. All of her. A second passed. He was still searching in her. Another second. More. He waited a full thirty before asking, his voice so soft and tender, “What would you do if you found out another person cared about you? If you mattered to one more person?”
“Nothing.” She was trying to convey her feelings through her eyes. She wanted him to know so badly. “I wouldn’t run. I wouldn’t walk. I wouldn’t hide. I’d do nothing except stand and embrace it.”
His eyes darkened, an emotion passed in them, one that had her heart beating so fast again. “Yeah?” He let go of her hand, but touched the side of her face. He held her in the palm of his hand, and his thumb rubbed over her cheek. It was like he was smoothing away any lingering worries she might have. “What if I was that person?”
She leaned toward him, her eyes going from his lips back to his gaze. Both were pulling her in, making her yearn for more. “Then I’d say, I feel the same.” Her breath held in her throat. They were talking in code, but it was out now. She was telling him how she felt, and a second later, his lips were on hers.
This. She turned, wound her arms around his neck. This was everything.

My Review:

This was a fun and entertaining story with lots of hot sex. It actually was a bit too much sex for my liking because it left no space for the sentimental part and became too focused on the intimacy which also made it hard for the characters to even admit to their feelings.

The Story:
Riley and Mark have known each other for years since his friend Fletcher is her cousin. Though besides the one kiss all those years ago, nothing else ever happened between them because the time never was in their favor, meaning either she was dating someone or he had a girlfriend.
Now when Mark volunteers to be Riley's caddie for the charity golf tournament for Make-A-Wish they both hit it off pretty quickly though Riley has to concentrate on the tournament and she's not sure how to do that when gorgeous Mark is on the green with her and all she wants to do is do him.
Will they both finally get their chance? And how will their different lives fit together?

I liked Mark in the previous books and was really excited to read more about him but even though I really enjoyed this book I liked Sidelined and Fastball a bit better. Mark and Riley knew each other for years but there was never anything more than a kiss they shared. Now they are pretty fast involved and it felt a bit rushed because when they’ve really liked each other that much, there could have been something sooner between those two – despite both of them having partners in the past years – because come on, they saw each other every now and then and never did anything happen?
There was a lot of sex in this book and besides of figuring out how to manage their different work schedules there wasn't much else which was a pity and because of this I couldn't connect at all with the characters. I wasn't a fan of Riley because it seemed to me that whatever didn’t work out the way she wanted, she was hell-bent to change it (no matter the opinion of others) and she was pretty selfish when it came to Mark which annoyed me.

I really enjoyed reading about the other two couples from the previous books and I think that the authors did a nice job altogether with this story which was a fast read for me. I am excited to find out what’s coming next in this series.

“Nate?” I whisper. “Maybe I took a wrong turn.”
“Nate!” I yell down the phone. “This isn’t funny.”
“I’m not laughing, sis. Keep going, we can see your headlights.” What am I doing? I’m basically relying on the fact that Nate and I had bonded a little and that both our parents are together. I’m not sure those facts are worth my life. No, he wouldn’t. I’m just being paranoid. The only time, except for school, where I didn’t bring my fucking pistol either. I sag in defeat. My dad will not be impressed with my not carrying, and my mom will no doubt be screaming at me from the other side about how these are the reasons why she and my dad educated me so much on firearms. I’ve failed as a fucking daughter. I shuffle up in my seat.
“Nate, I don’t fucking see anything up here but ja—OMG!” I slam on the breaks, all four tires locking up in a skid. I squeeze the steering wheel tightly, banging down the locks on the doors. “Nate!” I yell into the phone.
Slowly, I look up out the front windscreen, the thick dust from my tires interrupting the loose gravel still floating in the air and that’s when I see it again.
Ten men.
Ten dark hoodies covering their faces.
Ten—“Nate..” understanding sets in. Ten.
Slamming the gear into reverse, I’m just about to floor it backwards—to hell with anything or anyone behind me—when my driver’s window smashes into a million pieces, the tiny shards of glass falling onto my lap. I scream, my hands coming up to shield my face just as an arm slips inside and pops up the lock.
A deep menacing chuckle breathes over the back of my neck just as a leather gloved hand wraps around my mouth and pulls me out of the car. “Hello Madison. You don't know us, but we know you. We want to play a game. Here's what happens if you lose...”

I push past my father, still furious as hell. I walk straight to her cell, do the retinal scan and press the numbers to open the door, not even caring to put on my mask.
What I find is a broken girl.
Her body lying on the floor like a wet rag.
Buckets of water thrown on the floor near her.
A chair in the middle painted red from blood. Her blood.
Red welts and puncture wounds mark her body. Welts and wounds that aren’t mine.
How fucking dare they.
She’s mine.
As I step into her cell, I take a second to wipe my bloody hands on my shirt. No matter how hard I try, it won’t disappear completely, and for some reason that makes me feel bad. I look at her small, frail body and wonder how the hell I’m going to fix this. She’s been beaten to the point of losing her will to live. I never thought he would go this far … that he would ruin her to a point of no return. This shouldn’t have happened … and it’s all my fucking fault.
Going on one knee, I gently pick her up and hold her in my arms as I get back up. She’s cold, and she isn’t even shivering to make up for it. Holding her close to my body in the hopes that it’ll make her a bit warmer, I walk out of the cell and into the light. Right now, the only thing on my mind is her safety, and nothing’s gonna stand in my way of securing it.
My father stands in the middle of the big hall, watching me, along with the three women who’ve been working in the kitchen all day. Their silent looks tell me enough, but nothing will stop me. Rage has taken me beyond what I thought I was willing to sacrifice. I feel invincible, capable of destroying the world, if that’s what it takes to keep her with me.
“Don’t,” my father says. “You’re making a mistake.”
“No, you did, the moment you took me away from her! Don’t fucking dare to interfere again.”
“Angel …”
“You might be my father, but I’m the best you have, and you know damn well no one in this company can win from me, so don’t even try to take her away from me. You’d better not get in my way.”
“I can’t let you take her out of this place,” he says.
“Watch me,” I growl, walking toward him.
“Angel, you know this place is specifically designed to contain our prisoners. If you take her out, who knows what will happen. She might escape, and this time for real. You don’t want that to happen. You know what the consequences are.”
“She won’t,” I spit.
“You don’t know that.”
“I’ll make sure of it.”
He blocks my way, standing in front of me, so I stop next to him. He doesn’t attempt to grab my arm, even though I suspected he would. He’s smarter than I thought.
“So you’re just gonna leave? You do realize this will never end well?” he says.
I glance at him. “I will give you your information. But I will do it my way. Where I want. How I want. My terms.”
“You know it will fail.”
“We’ll see about that,” I growl, gripping her body tight. “Now leave me the hell alone.”
I walk past him, blowing out a deep breath as he lets me pass. He doesn’t attempt to stop me like before. Probably because he’s seen my determination and realizes it has its strength. Or maybe because he fears it.
With Sky’s life hanging by a thread, I wrap my hands around her body and let her head rest on my shoulder. For a second, as I walk through the hallway, I glance over my shoulder. An unfamiliar feeling rushes through me the moment I see my father’s stupefied face. Amusement, maybe. But it feels more like pride.
“Where are you going?” he yells after me.
With a confident sneer, I answer, “Home.”

About the author:

Meli Raine writes romantic suspense with hot bikers, intense undercover DEA agents, bad boys turned good, and Special Ops heroes - and the women who love them.
Meli rode her first motorcycle when she was five years old, but she played in the ocean long before that. She lives in New England with her family.

My review:

The suspenseful story continues! I loved it!
This second book is entirely from Drew’s POV and I actually liked this even better than the first from Lindsay’s.

The Story:
Four years ago not only Lindsay's life was changed by three men but also Drew’s. Lindsay is enraged but so is Drew. Those three men have still not received their deserved punishment and now Lindsay’s receiving threats and text messages by them. Drew is on high alert but his feelings for her have a negative effect on his work and his emotions are getting harder to ignore with each day.

The story picked up where the first book ended though was now from Drew’s perspective. It’s equally suspenseful as the first book if not more because Drew’s alertness made me really tense.
I loved the book for its suspense but the romance part or rather the rushed intimacy was something that bothered me already in the first book as well as in this one. I had to push through the middle part because it felt rather slow to read but after that I was captured again by Drew and his struggles.

The book was well written and Drew really grew on me though Lindsay was still annoying sometimes because I never knew what she was thinking and she had constant mood swings.

OMG the huge cliffhanger at the end was killing me! I can't believe that the author ended this book at such a suspenseful part! It was killing me to read the last few pages! I want the next book now! I need to know who's all involved in that scheme. Give those Bastards what they deserve!

This series is actually one of my first political thriller read's and I really like it a lot so far even with the constant hate towards Lindsay’s family.

If you’re looking for a suspenseful book that keeps you on the edge until the very end - or at least until the end of each book so far - than this will be a good story for you.
