Eve

Two years ago, I made a deal with the devil. That night, I lost everything. That night, I thought he’d died.

But he’s back. Risen, like Lazarus, from the dead. And he’s dark. Darker than he was before. More dangerous. Unhinged. A scarred, tattooed savage.

The way he looks at me, it should terrify me, but I’m drawn to him, to his intensity. Consumed by it. By him. Even though I know if I’m not careful, his obsession will destroy me.

Zach

I should have died that night two years ago. My mistake cost my men their lives. It should have cost me mine. But I survived. And the day I learned she did too, I made it my mission to find her.

I sought her out. Tracked her. Shadowed her every move. I’ve been inside her home. Eaten her food. Drank her liquor. I’ve stood beside her bed and watched her sleep.

She has so many secrets, and I know one of them. It’s the one where our pasts collided. The one that destroyed me.

And it’s the reason I’ve come for her.

I never intended to touch her, but I did. And now that I’ve had a taste, I want more. I want her. But that won’t change why I’m here. It won’t change why I came for her.

Book Review: Last First Kiss by Sidney Halston

I was so excited for this book!! Although I wasn’t sure at first how much I would like that the roles were reversed and that a woman was the bodyguard for a man. I don’t want to sound like a sexist because I do like to read about strong heroines but, call me old-fashioned, I'm still a woman that swoons over the strong guys protecting their women. And Rocco Monroe wasn't happy about needing a bodyguard either.
Anyway, I think the author did a fantastic job with this book, which I enjoyed a lot. Especially that she addressed the topic about how hard it was for women to prove themselves in a man’s world.

The Story:
Annabelle Clad loves to work on computers but it’s time to finally get a job out on the field. Convincing her brother that she sure is capable of protecting the next client is harder than she’d like. It has always been harder for her as a woman to prove herself in this man’s world but she’s stubborn and determined to show them that she’s not just a girl but a strong woman who can handle any tough situation. Though working for Rocco Monroe will have its own complications which she doesn’t expect as she knew not to mix work with pleasure no matter how hot or famous he was.

'She could pretend all she wanted, but there was an attraction, a spark, that couldn't be denied.'

Thoughts:
Joey was Annie’s overprotective brother but I get where he came from considering her history. Although I felt bad that Annie constantly had to prove herself, I understood why Joey was worried about her.

I liked the background story of Annie and also of Rocco although it felt very distant for what surely were very emotional and sensitive pasts.

Rocco wasn’t easy to characterize because he was a famous actor and as usual the tabloids never told stories as they really occurred. So, he was judged on stuff that was exaggerated or never even happened. He was nicer than I expected and not at all snobbish. I wasn’t so sure how I liked that he was instantly fixated on Annie but I get that she was hot and he was drawn to her.

Even though there was instant chemistry between the two main characters, it took some time for them to explore it, which I liked a lot because nothing ruins a story more than for the people to get it done and over with in the first chapter already.
But while it wasn’t instant-love they still got attached to each other too sudden for my liking. I just didn’t feel it coming, partly because I never got emotionally close to the characters and their story which was a pity because I liked them but I just never felt their feelings grow for each other and it was hard to comprehend what was going on inside them.

Anyway, it still wasn’t at all easy for them emotionally because their line of work just wasn’t that compatible and as hard it was for her to open up and relax, it was equally hard for him to see her stand between him and any danger coming his way.

“Crazy, it seems to me that you don't need your gun to make anyone move. When you narrow those hazel eyes and get in your ninja headspace you can will people to move.”

What I loved most were the sort-of articles at the beginning of every chapter. It gave a better understanding on what happened outside of the characters bubble without interrupting their story with throwing information into the pages at random. It was just so fitting and I loved how it was done.

The ending felt a bit too abrupt but all in all I absolutely enjoyed this read! It was mostly an easy and quick read (probably because I wasn’t as emotionally invested as I often was) but also had some heavier topics regarding Annie’s story. The characters were all loveable and the heightened suspense farther into the story didn’t let me put the book down. An absolutely recommended read!

Blog Tour & Book Review: Hate to Love You by Tijan

Hate to Love You
by Tijan
Genre:
Contemporary Romance
Release Date: August 28th, 2017

Blurb:

Rule #1: No hot guys.
It might sound ridiculous. I get it. It kind of is, but college was supposed to be my sanctuary. It was my place to start over. The rumors, the whispers, and the jealousy I endured through high school would all be gone.
No one would know me at college.

Rule #2: No drama.
I’d major in pre-law. I’d make a few loyal friends. Everything would be easy breezy. No one was going to use me or hurt me. I wouldn’t let them.

Rule #3: New year. New place. New me.
Right?
Wrong.
And all because of Shay Coleman.

Football captain and quarterback, he was the big guy on campus. The cocky guy in my political science class with a smirk. I hated him on sight . . .

. . . and he was about to break all my rules.

Excerpt:

I was almost grinning from delight as I shoved open the back door. If I hit him, hey, all was fair in the war we were fighting of who could piss each other off the best.
It didn’t.
He was leaning against the wall, the back of his head resting on the brick, and he looked over to smirk at me. “I want to see your room.”
I thrust my hand out. “I’ll take those notes.”
That smirk just widened. He patted his bag and pushed off from the wall. “They’re in my email. I need to get on a computer.” He patted my arm and moved past me, heading inside. “I can use yours.”
“Hey!” I followed him in.
He was looking up the stairs. “Sabrina said you were on the fourth floor. You saw my place. I want to see yours. It’s only fair.”
He wasn’t waiting for my go-ahead. He was already up and rounding second floor to third. He’d be at my floor before I could get there. “Stop! I am not okay with this.”
He was at the third-floor door. He glanced down with that same goddamn smirk. “Better tell me which room or I’m going to hang out in the hallway.”
“Why are you always smirking? Is it permanently attached to your face?”
“What room, Clarke?” He was at my hallway door.
Fucking hell. I gritted my teeth. “Wait. Just wait. My door automatically locks.”
He’d opened the door but let it shut. Waiting as I covered the last set of stairs, I refused to let him see me panting. I stood there, purposely holding my breath until he narrowed his eyes and cocked his head to the side. “Breathe, Clarke. You’re going to pass out.”
I almost burped out the small pocket of air I’d been holding. “I hate you so much.”
“Yeah, yeah.” He waved that off. “We get it. Eternal damnation in hell, the whole shebang. Whatever.” He nodded to the door. “Stop stalling. I want to see your room.”
I was picturing pitchforks and fire. Maybe that was the burning smell he mentioned. It was hell, and all the fire in there. I yanked the door, glaring as I did. “Was this Sabrina’s idea?”
“Nope. All mine.” He was right behind me. I could feel his breathing. “She refused to tell me your room number, said I had to call.”
My eyes widened at the thought of him coming up by himself, strolling down the hallway, and then knocking on my door. Good Lordy gracious. Too many would’ve seen him at my door. I would’ve been the talk of the dorm.
I shuddered, unlocked, and entered my room.

My review:
'I didn't like this guy. Remember?'
description

Why, oh why?! I’ve heard so much about this author and I can’t believe it took me so long to finally pick up one of her books.

Although I do read college romances occasionally, it’s getting harder to find well written ones that really interest me. (I believe that’s especially the case the older I become.) Anyway, I had some troubles getting into the story at first; otherwise I would have given it more stars. Kennedy was kind of a weird girl. I get why she was like that but it made it so much harder or almost impossible to connect with her character. It felt like that at least for me. I’m probably a too nice person and would be the invisible one at college. But moving on, I worked my way through the first few chapters and got to like the story more and more or rather began to love it after a few bumps.
'This was light and fun and sexy and I was forgetting how much I hated the guy.'
You’ll find the typical college dramas, sexual experiences, weird roommates, hateful stares and comments as well as embarrassing encounters in this book.

description

And although the story has the usual clichés and well known college-moments it’s still somewhat different. Maybe it’s because I haven’t read a lot of college romances in the last few years but I think that especially with Kennedy Clarke’s character, there was a different way about it. Also Shay Coleman, captain and quarterback of the college football team, usually a cocky bastard, was not as coldhearted and ass-like as one would believe. There’s more to him than one might think. Prejudices are quite common in our society and they are worst at college.
So try to think and see the whole of it before you judge someone; there's always more to a person than one would think because people rarely wear their hearts on the sleeves.
"No one should ever make you feel guilty for not opening up about yourself. You'll want to open up to the right ones."
description

The Story:
Kennedy Clarke is definitely not a wallflower, she has all the good looks and hot body, but still, she sets up her rules of no boys and no drama at college. High school had not been fun despite or especially because of her two big brothers and all the attention she’s gotten. Now it will all be different because she decided to stay in the background, make a few low-key friends and study her ass off.
'Guys liked how I looked, or they did until they found out Gage and Blake Clarke were my brothers. Opinions changed after that, though I had hoped that would change in college.'
But she hadn’t counted on Shay Coleman making his way into her life. He’s hard to shake off and his captivating looks require double takes. This screams for trouble and Kennedy soon finds herself in a whirlwind of chaos with not wanted emotions making its way to the surface. Problems are inevitable and the lines of her rules start to blur.
'Arrogant pricks could be real assholes in college, too. Shay Coleman taught me that last one.'
Thoughts:
Like I mentioned before, the beginning was a bit bumpy for me but as I got used to the writing and the characters strange way of thinking and behaving, I started to like it a lot.
'See, I could have my own inside jokes. Take that, snotty roommate and two friends.
Insert karate chop here.'
I was surprised at how much I liked Shay Coleman as I was used to the hatred usually accompanying such character. Star quarterback and hottest guy at college, every girl wanted to do him and every guy wanted to be him. This was mostly a warn signal for the main female character to a person causing troubles. Anyway, he was cocky and he was a smartass but he was also really nice, loving, smart, caring, protective and passionate. I wasn’t used to those characteristics of such a cliché person. This threw me for a loop.
Shay’s personality was otherworldly. I don’t know how else to describe him. There’s no way a man like him exists in the real world. He’s most certainly most woman’s (wet) dream.
'Why did I feel this guy inside me so much?'
description

Gage was a nice character as well and although he was a heartthrob, he was lovely and cared for his sister.

The story also dealt with some tougher topics although they weren’t really dealt with in a way I would have liked but rather grazed. Though I get it, because the main character was partly just indirectly affected and dealt with it in her own way how she thought acceptable.

Kennedy appeared to be a strong person and she partly was really tough but she also tried to avoid a repeat of what happened to her in high school. That’s why she acted tough and it was mostly because she didn’t want to be classified as vulnerable. Kennedy just wanted to protect herself and not get hurt again.
'I came off as a bitch, but trust me. There was a reason. I'd learned it was better to start swinging first than to get hit by someone else, metaphorically speaking.'
I liked the differences that I made out to other typical college romances although there were few. But it was a well written, enjoyable and entertaining story. It wasn’t really a road down memory lane for me because college in my country is so much different but I couldn’t stop reminiscing about the past.

Although I like to read college romances here and there, I prefer the HEA kind of reads and no matter how high school or college romances end, there is always a stale aftertaste because you never know how life will really continue for the characters. Because, come on, how many HEA do you know in real life that started in high school or college? I mean, there might be a few but out of how many? I’m sure you get what I mean. Anyway, I still liked the ending of this book.

Now I really have to catch up on those other books I already have from this author because this book definitely whetted my appetite for her stories.

A new standalone dark romance coming from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Nicole Blanchard.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25557000-toxic

Excerpt:

My hands flex on his skin, but he's so intent on my response he either doesn't notice or doesn't care. Beneath my touch, he turns to granite and a part of me wants to take back my question, but I can’t.
“What's wrong?” I ask, and I hope it deflects from this line of conversation. “Did I hurt you?”
He breaks eye contact and looks down to where my hands are touching his skin. The moment his eyes land on where our bodies connect, it makes me want to drop my hand. How close he always manages to get to me whenever I let curiosity—or stupidity—get the better of me is astounding.
"Would take more than that to hurt me, little mouse."
I feel his words like dark secrets. They unfurl inside me, a molten mixture of pleasure and shame, a heady combination that invites me to ask for more. He's a craving I can't quite shake. A disease slowly spreading through me. My head tells me I should walk away, but my greedy heart begs for more of his illicit attention.
"Little mouse?" I keep my focus on my fingers. Otherwise, they'll betray my nerves. I swipe antibacterial cream over his skin and realize resistance is practically impossible. Not when I can feel his muscles flexing underneath my hands, the heat coming off him in waves, and my body's answering thrum.
It has been so long since I’ve felt anything other than violence and fear. The two have become so tightly intertwined that I was certain until now I'd never feel this again. Never feel warmth pooling low in my belly and radiating through my core or the answering wetness slicking between my legs.
Horror accompanies the rush of pleasure, and I want to fling myself backward, but I know I can't let this dangerous man see my reaction. I can't let him know the effect he has on me. Can't let him have that kind of power over me.
"Yes,” he finally says. “Because you always look like you want to scurry away into a corner and hide."
His words make me want to do exactly that. My eyes dance to the door and then back to my hand as I swipe away another smear of blood from his skin. It would be so easy to escape him and his all-too-knowing stare. The reaction I can't deny. The yearning. Ten steps would bring me right back to my dreary life where I can drown in the day-to-day misery and the pain that blots out my unfortunate reality.
They are ten steps I don’t take. I refuse to let King get the better of me again and return to doctoring his wounds, trading the wipes for clean, white bandages. Unlike Vic, when this man pressures me, tests my boundaries, I find myself wanting to fight back, wanting to go at him with teeth bared and fists balled.
He lays a big, scratched-up hand over mine, pinning it to the heated flesh of his well-muscled chest. I peer up through my lashes and find the corner of his mouth tipped up in a half smile that would look pleasant on any other man.
On King, it's a warning.
Or a threat.
My heart thumps in my chest, a rabbit trying to escape the pursuit of a predator. I take deep breaths to try to calm its frenetic pace, but it's futile while in his presence. I finish the bandage on his chest without taking the bait. Despite how alive he makes me feel, or maybe because of it, I won't encourage him. I won't go down that road. I did it once before, and it cost me everything.
I'm waiting for him to throw out another challenge as I finish with his chest and arms, dump the trash into a bag, and set it by the door.
"Can you stand for me?" I gesture with a roll of gauze I grabbed from my bag of supplies. "I need to wrap your ribs until they can get you in for an X-ray."
He obliges, reminding me of a half-tame animal submitting to human attention only to turn around and rip the person’s throat out seconds later. His abdomen ripples, and the low hum of desire that I've steadily been trying to ignore roars back to life made sharper by the edge of danger.
Like fucking in public.
It's wrong and dirty and you sort of hate yourself for enjoying it so much, but you come harder than you ever have in your life. It makes my breathing grow ragged, and I'm afraid he can hear me but can't find the willpower to back away.
I have to lean close to wrap the bandage around his chest, which doesn't help. His scent fills my nose like a drug. My fingers brush against his stomach, and I'd give anything for five minutes to explore the line of muscles that disappears into his waistband.
The fact that I manage to finish binding his ribs is a small miracle. He doesn't make a move to touch me the entire time, even though I spend it wishing he would. When I’m done, I can feel his eyes on me, patient and predatory as I pack up the rest of my supplies.
"Stop doing that!" I bite out, revealing just how badly he has my nerves frayed.
He gives me that half-grin again. "Doing what?"
"Staring at me like that. Are you trying to piss me off? Do you want me to have you reassigned?"
As though daring me, he takes a step forward. "You won't do that," he challenges.
"No?" I retort though I can hear the flimsy note to my voice.
His grin widens. "No."
I shake my head and feel my body drift closer to his. "I don’t know what you want from me, I don’t know what you think we’re doing here, but we shouldn’t. Let’s just get that clear right now. Also, I appreciate your concern for my safety, but there isn’t anything you can do to help me, and this sort of attention is only going to make my situation worse."
He shifts, and my whole body stiffens as he brings his lips to my cheek where the memory of the bruise throbs.
"Don't," I protest, but it comes out sounding more breathy than firm.
"I'll make you a deal," he says as he closes a bit more of the distance between us. I nearly whimper from frustration, fear, and need. "One kiss. One kiss and I won't bother you again. No one will have to know."
"You can't be serious," I whisper, but I know from the determined look in his eyes he's serious. “Why?”
His lips return to my cheek, surprising me with his gentleness, and I'm almost ashamed that my initial instinct is to flinch away from him. He seems to recognize it, and he sighs, pausing long enough to meet my eyes. We wait . . . watching each other. But when he doesn’t follow through with a slap or a biting comment, my traitorous body relaxes.
My body is clearly an idiot.
"C’mon," he coaxes as his lips grow bolder. "Let me give you this. One kiss. I promise you'll enjoy it. Let me show you a little something sweet to take away from the sour. One kiss, and if you want me to walk away after I will."
He's the devil incarnate, the snake that tempted Eve. Though, I'm sure as hell not in paradise. I hate myself for even considering it. Loathe the way my body shouts at me to say yes.
"You won't bother me again?" The responding triumphant gleam in his eyes screams that I've taken a step off a precipice. There will be no going back after this.
"Scouts honor." I snort, causing him to grin. "So, is that a yes?"
"You asked me earlier if I wanted to know your name."
He nods, but it's a quick, jerky movement. For the first time, he's the one caught off guard.
"I think I'd like that." It'll be like saying goodbye, or at least that's what I tell myself. Goodbye to the rush of desire, the feeling of being alive. It was fun while it lasted but this level of craziness leads nowhere good.
For a moment, I think my ears are tricking me, but no. King makes a deep, satisfied groan in the back of his throat. I'm so distracted I don't notice he's been slowly moving closer until his body is pressed fully against mine. My hands go to his shoulders, and I'm grateful for the bandages separating us. Too much contact with his skin and my brain would surely short circuit.
"Gracin," he says, his lips so close they graze the shell of my ear. "My name is Gracin."
Then his mouth covers mine.
